Performance Evaluation of Planetary Boundary Layer Schemes in Simulating Structures of Wintertime Lower Troposphere in Seoul Using One-Hour Interval Radiosonde Observation

We investigated the structures of wintertime lower troposphere in Seoul, South Korea on 17 and 18 January 2017 by performing 1 h interval radiosonde observation numerical simulations. In daytime January, height convective boundary layer (CBL) sharply quickly increased when residual became a part CBL. From afternoon moist air with clouds began to substantially intrude radiative heating/cooling weakened. As result, mixing was inhibited vertical gradients potential temperature water vapor ratio changed little January. evaluated performance four planetary (PBL) parameterization schemes (the Yonsei University (YSU), Mellor–Yamada–Janjić (MYJ), Mellor–Yamada–Nakanishi–Niino (MYNN), Asymmetric Convective Model version 2 (ACM2) schemes) coupled Weather Research Forecasting model simulating against observation. The general tendencies wind speed were well-reproduced However, sharp increase CBL did not appear simulations, implying that process becoming is well-parameterized. Additionally, simulated near surface smaller compared found small-scale turbulence CBL, which mixes advected pre-existing air, reproduced well PBL schemes. Compared other most accurate simulation MYJ scheme, while development moisture advection relatively MYNN scheme.
